Anemone Gardens is a charming dive site located off the coast of Khor Fakkan on the UAE's East Coast, named for the spectacular displays of sea anemones that carpet sections of the reef. This beginner-friendly site offers an intimate and colorful diving experience in the warm waters of the Gulf of Oman. The defining feature of this site is, as the name implies, the abundant anemone colonies that thrive here. Large bubble-tip anemones and magnificent anemones create a living garden across the rocky substrate, each hosting families of clownfish that dart in and out of the protective tentacles. The symbiotic relationship between anemone and clownfish is one of the most captivating spectacles in the underwater world, and few sites in the UAE offer as many opportunities to observe it up close as Anemone Gardens. Beyond the signature anemones, the reef supports a healthy community of hard and soft corals that provide habitat for a diverse array of marine species. Schools of small reef fish swirl above the coral heads, while larger species like grouper and sweetlips patrol the boundaries of their territories. The sandy areas between reef patches are worth investigating for hidden treasures - garden eels can often be spotted swaying in the current, and various species of goby and shrimp maintain their fascinating partnerships on the sandy bottom. Diving conditions at Anemone Gardens are gentle and accommodating. The site features comfortable depths that allow for extended bottom times, and currents are typically light. This makes it an excellent choice for newer divers building their confidence, as well as for underwater photographers who appreciate the ability to hover and compose their shots without battling the current. Visibility averages 5 to 12 meters, with the best conditions generally found during the cooler months between October and April when water temperatures range from 22 to 27 degrees. The site is accessed by boat from Khor Fakkan, with the journey taking only a few minutes. Anemone Gardens may not be the most dramatic dive site on the UAE's East Coast, but what it lacks in scale it more than makes up for in charm and character. The abundance of anemone-clownfish colonies alone makes it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers.
