Shark Island is an exciting dive site located off the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates near Khor Fakkan, in the emirate of Sharjah. Despite its dramatic name, this beginner-friendly site welcomes divers of all experience levels with its accessible conditions and fascinating underwater terrain in the warm waters of the Gulf of Oman. The site takes its name from a small rocky island offshore whose silhouette, when viewed from certain angles, resembles the dorsal fin of a shark breaking the surface. Beneath the waterline, the island's rocky foundations extend into the sea, creating a diverse underwater landscape of boulder fields, sandy channels, and coral-encrusted walls that offer something new around every turn. Marine life at Shark Island is abundant and varied. The rocky habitats support thriving communities of reef fish including colorful wrasses, surgeonfish, and schools of fusiliers that dart through the water column. Moray eels are a common sight, their heads protruding from crevices in the rocks, while nudibranchs and flatworms reward the observant diver with their intricate patterns and brilliant colors. Turtles are regularly encountered here, often seen feeding on the algae growing on the rocks or resting in sheltered spots. On lucky days, reef sharks may make a brief appearance, living up to the site's evocative name. The diving conditions at Shark Island are generally welcoming. Shallow areas around the island allow for comfortable exploration at modest depths, while the surrounding reef extends deeper for those wishing to venture further. Currents are usually mild, though they can pick up during tidal changes, bringing nutrient-rich water that energizes the reef ecosystem. Visibility typically ranges from 5 to 15 meters depending on the season and recent weather conditions. The best time to dive Shark Island is from October through May, when water temperatures are comfortable at 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and visibility tends to be at its peak. The site is accessible by a short boat ride from Khor Fakkan or nearby marinas, making it a convenient choice for both half-day and full-day diving excursions. Whether you are a newly certified diver eager to build your experience or a seasoned underwater explorer looking for a relaxing dive with reliable marine life encounters, Shark Island offers a satisfying experience that captures the charm of East Coast UAE diving.
