Hole in the Wall is a distinctive and aptly named dive site situated along the rocky eastern coastline of the UAE near Khor Fakkan. This beginner-friendly site is cherished by local divers for its unique geological feature - a natural archway carved through a rocky formation that creates an unforgettable swim-through experience even at shallow depths. The star attraction is the natural tunnel or hole that cuts through a rock wall underwater, large enough for divers to comfortably pass through while enjoying the play of light filtering through from both sides. This dramatic feature provides an exciting focal point for the dive and creates wonderful photographic opportunities as sunlight streams through the opening, illuminating the passage with shifting patterns of blue and gold. Beyond the signature swim-through, the surrounding reef offers plenty to explore. Rocky walls and slopes are adorned with hard and soft corals, while sandy patches between the formations host garden eels and various species of gobies. The area around the hole itself is particularly rich in marine life, as the structure provides shelter and creates micro-currents that concentrate nutrients and attract fish. Look for scorpionfish resting motionless on the rocks, lionfish hovering beneath ledges, and shoals of glassfish that shimmer like liquid silver in the beam of your torch. Conditions at Hole in the Wall are generally suitable for divers with basic certification. The site sits at comfortable depths, and currents are typically gentle, though they can increase during tidal shifts. Visibility ranges from 5 to 12 meters on average, with the best conditions occurring during the cooler months. The optimal diving season runs from October through April when water temperatures settle between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius and the sea is typically calmer. Morning dives often yield the best visibility and lighting conditions for photography through the arch. Accessible by boat from Khor Fakkan, Hole in the Wall rewards every visit with its combination of unique topography and thriving marine ecosystem. The natural archway alone makes this site a must-visit on any East Coast diving itinerary, offering a memorable experience that stands out among the region's many excellent dive sites.
