Hole in the Wall dive site is a distinctive underwater destination near Khor Fakkan on the UAE's East Coast, characterized by a natural rock formation with a dramatic swim-through passage that gives the site its memorable name. With depths reaching around 15 meters, this site is rated for advanced divers and offers a blend of exciting topography and reliable marine life encounters. The centerpiece of this dive is the natural archway or tunnel carved through a rocky wall formation by centuries of wave action and erosion. The opening is wide enough for divers to pass through comfortably, and the passage itself is adorned with encrusting corals, sponges, and small marine organisms that create a colorful living frame around the swimmer. The play of light through the arch creates spectacular photo opportunities, particularly during morning dives when sunlight streams through at dramatic angles. Beyond the signature feature, the surrounding reef offers varied terrain to explore. Rocky walls drop to sandy patches, creating habitat transitions that support different marine communities. The walls around the hole are particularly productive, with crevices harboring lionfish, scorpionfish, and various eel species. Nudibranchs and flatworms add splashes of unexpected color to the rocky surfaces, making this an excellent site for macro photography. Schools of reef fish are abundant, with fusilier, snapper, and anthias creating moving clouds of color around the rock formations. Turtles are frequently encountered, often resting in the sheltered areas near the arch. The site's structure creates interesting current patterns that occasionally bring in larger visitors from the open water. The advanced designation reflects the combination of moderate depth and the navigational awareness needed to explore the swim-through and surrounding terrain safely. Currents can develop during tidal transitions, and divers should be comfortable managing their buoyancy in and around the confined passage. The best conditions are found from October through April, when visibility improves to 8-15 meters and water temperatures range from 22 to 27 degrees. Accessed by boat from Khor Fakkan, this site is a favorite among local divers who never tire of passing through its namesake geological wonder.
