Blairgowrie Pier is one of Melbourne's most popular and rewarding shore dive sites, located on the Mornington Peninsula in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria. With a maximum depth of just 7 meters, this beginner-friendly pier dive is celebrated for its extraordinary diversity of marine life, making it one of the finest temperate pier dives in the world. The pier's pylons form a forest of vertical habitats extending from the surface to the sandy bottom, each one encrusted with a rich community of sponges, ascidians, bryozoans, and hydroids. The spaces between and beneath the pylons create a sheltered underwater world where light filters down in shafts and the structure provides protection from current and predators. Blairgowrie Pier is justly famous for its weedy seadragons, those ethereal relatives of the seahorse that drift through the seagrass with impossible grace. The pier is one of the most reliable locations in Australia to encounter these extraordinary creatures. Pot-bellied seahorses cling to the pylons and seagrass fronds, while various species of pipefish add to the syngnathid diversity. The macro life is world-class. Nudibranchs in an astonishing range of colors and forms graze on the pylon growth, while blue-ringed octopus - one of the world's most venomous creatures but shy and beautiful - can be spotted in their tiny dens. Decorator crabs, sea urchins, and colorful seastar species add to the invertebrate spectacle. Larger visitors include smooth and elephant rays gliding over the sand, and seasonal aggregations of spider crabs that create one of nature's most surreal underwater spectacles. Banjo sharks rest on the sandy bottom, and various species of leatherjacket hover among the pylons. On night dives, the pier transforms into a completely different environment, with nocturnal species emerging and bioluminescence adding magic to the experience. Conditions are gentle and forgiving - minimal current, easy shore entry, and shallow depths make this accessible to all levels. Water temperatures range from 10 to 20 degrees, requiring a good wetsuit. Blairgowrie Pier proves spectacularly that great diving is about life, not depth.
