Rye Pier is a beloved shore dive site on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, located within the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay. Despite its maximum depth of just 6 meters, this site punches well above its weight in terms of marine life diversity and is particularly famous for its spectacular seasonal weedy seadragon population. The pier structure extends from the beach into the bay, with its wooden pylons creating a long corridor of artificial reef habitat. Each pylon is a miniature ecosystem, encrusted with sponges, ascidians, mussels, and hydroids that provide food and shelter for an astonishing variety of marine organisms. The spaces between pylons allow light to filter down, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere of dappled illumination that is particularly beautiful on sunny days. The undisputed stars of Rye Pier are the weedy seadragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus), one of Australia's most iconic marine species. These ethereal creatures, closely related to seahorses, drift among the seagrass beds and around the pier pylons with an almost supernatural grace. Their elaborate leaf-like appendages provide camouflage that makes spotting them a rewarding challenge. Rye Pier is considered one of the most reliable locations in Australia to observe these remarkable animals in the wild. Beyond seadragons, the site hosts an impressive cast of characters. Giant cuttlefish display their mesmerizing color-changing abilities, blue-ringed octopus hide in shells and crevices, and various species of pipefish, including the pot-bellied seahorse, reward patient observation. The sandy bottom between the pier and the seagrass beds harbors flathead, stingarees, and various species of leatherjacket. The advanced rating may seem surprising for a 6-meter site, but it reflects the site's popularity as a night dive location and the need for good buoyancy control in a confined pier environment with fragile marine life. Water temperatures in Port Phillip Bay range from about 10 degrees in winter to 21 degrees in summer. Visibility is typically 3 to 8 meters. The site is accessible directly from shore, making it one of Melbourne's most convenient dive sites. Rye Pier proves that great diving does not require depth or tropical water - just an abundance of life and the patience to appreciate it.
