Cut Throat at Turneffe Islands is an intermediate channel dive through a narrow cut in the reef where dramatic tidal exchanges create a natural fish aggregation point. The channel walls are lined with healthy hard corals and colorful encrusting sponges. During tidal changes, the cut fills with schools of snappers, grunts, and jacks moving between the lagoon and open water. Large tarpon lurk at the channel entrance, and nurse sharks rest on the sandy bottom. The site gets its dramatic name from the powerful current that can flow through during peak tides, though diving at slack tide provides a manageable and fish-rich experience.
