Tortuga is an advanced dive to 21 meters near the Bat Islands (Islas Murciélagos) off Guanacaste in Costa Rica's northern Pacific. Named for the sea turtles frequently spotted here, this rocky reef site is known for its big-animal encounters in current-swept waters. Bull sharks are the main attraction, regularly seen patrolling the deeper sections between August and November. The volcanic rock formations support healthy marine growth with sea fans, sponges, and schools of jacks and snappers. The challenging current conditions and seasonal bull shark presence make Tortuga one of the most exciting advanced dive sites in the Guanacaste region.
