Anfiteatro — the Amphitheater — is a beginner dive in northern Fuerteventura, near the resort town of Corralejo, where the volcanic reef has developed a bowl-shaped or amphitheater-like topography that creates a sheltered, enclosed diving environment with good natural orientation and a concentrated marine community. Corralejo's position at the island's northern tip, adjacent to the Lobos Islet and the channel between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, gives it access to the productive, clear waters that make northern Fuerteventura one of the Canary Islands' most rewarding dive areas. The amphitheater formation itself provides the structural interest of the dive: a curved or bowl-shaped section of reef that encloses a central area, the surrounding walls creating shelter from ambient current and concentrating the fish life that uses the formation as territory and shelter. The interior of the bowl is typically calmer than the open reef, making it particularly accessible for beginners who benefit from the reduced current and the contained, easily navigable environment. Fuerteventura's northern reef is characterised by volcanic basalt formations similar to those of neighbouring Lanzarote, but with the influence of the productive channel between the two islands adding to the biodiversity. The encrusting community on the amphitheater's walls includes the typical Canarian palette of sponges and anemones, and the endemic wrasse species that are constants in any Canary Islands dive move through the reef in characteristic constant motion. Large dusky grouper occupy the most prominent positions within the amphitheater formation with territorial confidence. Angel sharks are found on the sandy sections adjacent to Fuerteventura's north coast reef formations, and their presence is a realistic expectation at any sandy-bottom section of the Corralejo dive area. Sea turtles forage along this section of the coast, and their encounters add the warmth of a large wildlife encounter to a dive that is already thoroughly enjoyable in its own right. A welcoming introduction to northern Fuerteventura's reef diving.
