La Emboscada — the Ambush — is a beginner dive in northern Fuerteventura's Corralejo zone, its military name suggesting either a site where divers are 'ambushed' by unexpected wildlife encounters, or a location in the coastal landscape where the reef's geometry creates a natural hiding place that the name captures. In Canarian diving tradition, names that suggest surprise or concealment often indicate sites where the reef's varied topography hides the species that reward patient exploration. Corralejo's position at Fuerteventura's northern tip gives El Emboscada the benefit of the productive El Rio channel waters that make this zone one of the Canary Islands' best diving areas. Clear water, excellent biodiversity, and the potential for the angel shark encounters that are the northern Fuerteventura signature all apply to this beginner site. The 'ambush' character of the name suggests that the reef's topographic variety — overhangs, recesses, and the varied architecture of Corralejo's volcanic basalt — creates the hiding places from which wildlife surprises are most likely to emerge. The dive unfolds on the basalt reef typical of northern Fuerteventura, its surfaces colonised by the encrusting community that reflects the productive channel waters. Large moray eels represent one form of ambush resident: occupying crevices in the reef with only the head visible, they emerge with characteristic suddenness when investigating divers who approach too close. Common octopus — masters of concealment throughout the Canary Islands — are another source of the site's ambush character, their camouflage so precise that they are effectively invisible until movement reveals them. The sandy sections between basalt formations provide the habitat for angel sharks, whose own ambush strategy — resting motionless against the sandy substrate in near-perfect camouflage — fits the site's thematic name precisely. Watching an angel shark resolve from what appeared to be empty sand is one of the most distinctive wildlife encounters in Canarian diving, and La Emboscada's name suggests this is exactly the kind of surprise the site has been offering divers for years.
