Camino de Altura — the High Path — is a beginner dive in northern Fuerteventura's Corralejo dive zone, its name suggesting a route along an elevated section of reef that provides a high-level perspective over the surrounding underwater terrain. The 'camino' — path — aspect implies a dive that follows a defined route through the reef, using the elevated formation as a navigational guide and a varied habitat feature. Corralejo is the main dive hub of northern Fuerteventura, a resort town whose position adjacent to the Corralejo Natural Park dunes and the Lobos Islet gives it access to some of the most diverse and productive diving in the Canary Islands. The northern channel between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote is influenced by the El Rio current that passes through the strait, and even on sheltered sites like Camino de Altura, the water quality reflects this productive influence: clear, slightly cooler than the south coast sites, and biologically richer. The elevated section of reef that gives the site its name rises above the surrounding seafloor, providing the high-path perspective suggested by the name and concentrating marine life in the manner typical of topographic relief in the sea. The upper surface of the raised reef formation is well-lit and colonised by the algae-grazing species — parrotfish, wrasse, and damselfish — while the sides descend through the progressively richer encrusting community that develops with depth. Large sponge formations occupy prominent positions on the elevated reef, their size reflecting the productive water that flows through this northern Fuerteventura zone. The sandy areas surrounding the elevated reef path provide habitat for the bottom-dwelling species characteristic of Fuerteventura's sandy dive areas: stingrays move across the open substrate in characteristic undulating flight, and the sandy sections adjacent to the reef are worth scanning for resting angel sharks. A pleasant, well-structured beginner dive with the elevated reef feature providing clear navigation and varied habitat throughout.
