El Tazar is a beginner dive in Fuerteventura's Corralejo dive zone, taking its name from a local geographic feature or formation on the northern coast that has been adopted into the dive community's informal cartography of this productive stretch of Canarian coastal water. Corralejo's position at the island's northern tip, adjacent to the Lobos Islet and the El Rio channel that separates Fuerteventura from Lanzarote, gives it access to some of the Canary Islands' most productive diving — clear water, excellent biodiversity, and the angel sharks and sea turtles that characterise the northern Fuerteventura experience. The site unfolds on the volcanic basalt reef typical of the Corralejo dive zone, its formations descending from the shoreline through the algae-covered shallows to the richer encrusting community of mid-depth. Fuerteventura's northern coast benefits from the El Rio channel's influence — the productive current that flows through the strait between the two islands brings nutrients and clear water that support a denser and more diverse marine community than more sheltered coastal sites. This influence is apparent even at beginner sites like El Tazar, where the fish biomass and invertebrate diversity reflect the genuine productivity of the surrounding ocean. The encrusting community on the basalt formations includes the sponge and anemone assemblage typical of healthy Canarian reef, with the endemic wrasse species providing constant colour and movement across the algae-covered surfaces. Large moray eels occupy the most substantial crevices with characteristic confidence, and common octopus den in the smaller gaps between basalt boulders. Angel sharks are among the most celebrated encounters in northern Fuerteventura, their populations recovering under protection legislation in habitats like this one. The sandy sections between reef formations are the habitat to scan methodically — the reward of identifying a resting angel shark against the substrate is available to any beginner diver who develops the observational patience to look carefully. A genuine and accessible introduction to northern Fuerteventura's excellent dive environment.
