Qamea Freeway is an intermediate drift dive in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Qamea island in Fiji, where the current carries divers along a coral-covered reef wall at a thrilling pace. The 'freeway' effect occurs when tidal currents accelerate through the channel, allowing effortless cruising past dense soft coral gardens and walls of sea fans. Grey reef sharks and barracuda ride the same currents, while turtles rest in sheltered eddies. The reef is festooned with Fiji's trademark pink, purple, and orange soft corals that bloom spectacularly in the flow. Timing with the tidal cycle is crucial — the right current transforms this into one of Taveuni's most exhilarating drift dives.
