The Farne Islands are a world-class dive destination off the Northumberland coast, celebrated for intimate encounters with a thriving colony of Atlantic grey seals. These curious and playful animals regularly swim up to divers, making eye contact and performing underwater acrobatics — an experience that ranks among the UK's finest wildlife encounters. Beyond the seals, the islands' volcanic rock creates dramatic underwater terrain with kelp-covered gullies, walls, and tunnels hosting rich invertebrate communities of soft corals, anemones, and sponges. Depths range from shallow reef to 35 meters at outer sites. Boat access from Seahouses is standard. The North Sea exposure means cold water, variable visibility, and potential swell — but the seals make it all worthwhile.
