Limni Kournas

Limni Kournas is Crete's only natural freshwater lake, offering a unique inland diving experience in the Apokoronas region. This spring-fed lake nestled among hills near Georgioupolis reaches moderate depths with remarkably clear water, especially in the deeper sections where underwater springs feed the lake. Divers can explore the submerged treeline, rocky shelves, and the fascinating halocline layer where fresh and slightly brackish water meet. Freshwater turtles, eels, and small fish inhabit the lake, along with endemic invertebrates. The calm, current-free environment makes it an unusual but rewarding dive, and an excellent alternative when sea conditions are unfavorable. Water temperatures are cooler than the sea.
