Kateros Reef is an advanced dive near Nisyros reaching 40 meters, featuring a deep offshore reef system subject to strong Dodecanese currents. The reef rises from deep water, with walls covered in dense gorgonian forests and massive sponge colonies. The volcanic origin of the reef is evident in the dark mineral-stained rock and unusual formations. Currents sweeping across the reef attract impressive pelagic action: large schools of amberjack, barracuda, and tuna are regular visitors. Groupers of enormous size patrol the deeper sections. The combination of depth, current, volcanic geology, and prolific marine life makes Kateros one of Nisyros's most spectacular deep dives.
