Gili Layar is an advanced dive site in the Secret Gilis of Southwest Lombok, featuring a dramatic underwater landscape where steep reef walls descend to 28 meters around a sail-shaped island. The walls are adorned with impressive gorgonian sea fans, whip corals, and dense soft coral growth in vivid yellows and reds, fueled by currents that channel through the narrow strait. Large pelagic species are the main attraction here—reef sharks, giant trevally, and schools of barracuda patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge. The currents can be powerful and unpredictable, requiring divers to have solid drift diving experience and be comfortable with quick descents. Between the current-swept walls, sheltered coves harbor more delicate coral gardens and resident turtle populations. Gili Layar delivers the kind of adrenaline-pumping, big-fish diving that makes the Secret Gilis a destination worthy of serious exploration.
