The Sand is an intermediate dive site in the Secret Gilis of Southwest Lombok, where a gradually sloping sandy bottom descending to 24 meters is interspersed with scattered coral bommies and rock formations. Don't let the simple name fool you—the sandy terrain here is a hotspot for unusual critter encounters that rival any muck diving site. Wonderpus and mimic octopus have been spotted hunting across the sand flats, while sea moths, flying gurnards, and burrowing snake eels create a constantly shifting cast of characters. The coral bommies serve as oases of reef activity, each hosting its own community of anemonefish, moray eels, and cleaning shrimps. Blue-spotted ribbontail rays are common residents, often flushing from the sand as divers approach. The Sand is a site that rewards slow, observant diving and proves that some of Indonesia's most fascinating marine encounters happen not on dramatic walls or pinnacles, but on seemingly unremarkable stretches of seabed.
