Castle Rock, in Komodo's northern current zone, is a pinnacle dive that regularly features on lists of Southeast Asia's most thrilling drift dives — a submerged volcanic tower rising from 50 meters to just 4 meters below the surface, positioned in the tidal channel north of Gili Lawa Laut where converging currents produce some of the highest fish biomass on the planet. The site is renowned for tornadoes of trevally, resident reef sharks, and coral coverage so dense that the pinnacle itself can be difficult to see through the swirling fish. The dive is performed as a high-current drift, with divers entering upstream and spiraling around the pinnacle at 15-25 meters. Massive schools of bigeye trevally form vertical columns reminiscent of underwater tornadoes, while giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, rainbow runners, and fusiliers cycle through in tight schools. The pinnacle's cleaning stations attract resident whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, with grey reef sharks patrolling the deeper flanks and the occasional mobula ray or passing manta ray. The coral cover on Castle Rock is exceptional. The top of the pinnacle is carpeted with hard corals — table corals, staghorn, massive porites — while the flanks host gorgonian fans, soft corals in pink and electric purple, and black coral colonies at depth. Napoleon wrasse and bumphead parrotfish cruise the pinnacle's edges, and macro life on the coral heads includes nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and ornate ghost pipefish for photographers willing to work in the current. Castle Rock is Advanced Open Water diving only — strong drift-diving experience is essential, currents exceed three knots, and down-currents occur on the leeward side. Dives are always planned around slack water, with experienced operators scheduling around the tidal cycle to find the safest windows. Reached exclusively from Komodo liveaboard itineraries departing Labuan Bajo. Visibility 15-25 meters, water temperatures 24-28°C. Best conditions April through November with the clearest water May-July.
