Crystal Rock in Komodo National Park is a companion pinnacle to the more famous Castle Rock, sitting just to the north in the same high-current tidal channel — a submerged pinnacle rising from 30 meters to within 3 meters of the surface, whose steep coral-covered flanks host one of the most stunning soft-coral displays in Indonesia and a reliable concentration of pelagic marine life. It is typically dived in combination with Castle Rock on a single Komodo liveaboard day. The pinnacle's shallower depth profile makes it slightly more approachable than Castle Rock, with the reef top rising nearly to the surface and the sides dropping to 30 meters. Dives are drift-oriented but can be more relaxed during slack periods. The pinnacle's top is a field of massive table corals and staghorn colonies that support schools of anthias and butterflyfish, while the flanks are covered in red, pink, and purple soft corals that turn the entire pinnacle into a color field during slack tides. Pelagic action is reliable. Schools of bigeye trevally, giant trevally, rainbow runners, and dogtooth tuna patrol the pinnacle, and whitetip and blacktip reef sharks are resident. Napoleon wrasse cruise the reef edges, bumphead parrotfish graze on the coral, and mobula rays occasionally sweep through. The pinnacle's cleaning stations attract passing pelagics, and the macro life on the coral heads includes nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses on gorgonian fans, and ornate ghost pipefish among the soft corals. Crystal Rock is Advanced Open Water diving due to the current exposure, though slightly more forgiving than Castle Rock thanks to its shallower profile. Currents can still exceed two knots and demand good drift-diving skills. Reached via Komodo liveaboard itineraries from Labuan Bajo, typically combined with Castle Rock on the same day. Visibility 15-25 meters, water temperatures 24-28°C. Best conditions April through November.
