Kovalam is a beginner-friendly dive site off the coast of Kerala in southwestern India, where a rocky reef descends to 12 meters in the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. The reef features volcanic rock formations covered with hard corals, sponges, and algae that support a colorful community of tropical fish including butterflyfish, angelfish, and damselfish. Octopuses are frequently spotted among the rocky crevices, and sea snakes occasionally glide through the area, adding an exotic thrill. The calm conditions during the diving season from October to May provide excellent visibility and comfortable water temperatures. Kovalam's gentle profile and shallow depth make it an ideal introduction to scuba diving in India, with several PADI-certified dive centers offering courses from the nearby beach. This site showcases the understated beauty of Kerala's underwater world, where the Arabian Sea's warm currents support more marine diversity than most visitors expect from India's southwestern coast.
