Kovalam Beach is an intermediate dive site off Kerala's famous coastline in southwestern India, offering reef diving to 20 meters along rocky formations in the Arabian Sea. The volcanic rock substrate is colonized by hard corals, sponges, and algae that support a diverse community of tropical and subtropical marine species. Schools of snapper and fusilier patrol the reef, while large groupers inhabit the overhangs and crevices. Sea snakes are periodically encountered, along with cuttlefish and hunting octopuses. The site provides a good step up from nearby beginner sites, with slightly deeper water and more marine life diversity. Visibility peaks during the October to May diving season when calm conditions prevail along Kerala's coast. Kovalam Beach demonstrates the growing potential of India's southwestern coast as a diving destination, offering genuine reef encounters in waters that are only beginning to be explored by the recreational diving community.
