La Calcarella is an advanced dive site off Tavolara Island in northeast Sardinia, where a limestone reef contrasts with the island's predominantly granite geology. The site reaches 36 meters depth along a wall of calcareous rock riddled with small caves, tunnels, and solution holes typical of limestone dissolution. These cavities provide ideal habitat for lobsters, slipper lobsters, and large conger eels, while the outer wall surfaces support luxuriant gorgonian fans in red and yellow. The limestone substrate hosts a different biological community than the surrounding granite sites, including species of encrusting algae and sponges rarely seen elsewhere around Tavolara. The transition between volcanic granite above and sedimentary limestone below tells a geological story spanning millions of years. This geological uniqueness, combined with excellent marine life, makes La Calcarella a distinctive dive within the Tavolara MPA.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
