Tana di Gavino is an advanced dive site near Alghero on Sardinia's northwest coast, within the Capo Caccia-Isola Piana Marine Protected Area. This site features a deep cave system named after a legendary local hermit, with its entrance concealed beneath an imposing cliff face. The cave penetrates deep into the limestone headland, its passages decorated with ancient stalactites and mineral formations dating from when sea levels were far lower. Red coral colonies adorn the entrance zone, transitioning to cave-adapted fauna including rare crustaceans and sponges in the deeper sections. Lobsters and large conger eels inhabit the darker chambers. The combination of geological grandeur and biological richness makes Tana di Gavino one of Sardinia's most prestigious cave dives, requiring proper training and equipment.
