Kadena North Steps is an advanced shore dive site along Okinawa's west coast, accessed via concrete steps that descend from the seawall into the ocean. The reef here drops off into deeper water beyond a shallow coral garden, with the bottom structure featuring intricate coral formations, small swim-throughs, and sandy channels. The site is known for its macro life — leaf scorpionfish, ribbon eels, and a remarkable diversity of nudibranchs attract underwater photographers from across Japan. Anemone gardens host multiple species of clownfish, and mantis shrimp peer from their burrows in the sand. Seasonal visitors include sea turtles and cuttlefish. The advanced rating reflects the entry conditions and potential for surge near the steps, though the reef itself offers comfortable diving once past the entry zone. Kadena North Steps is a favorite among Okinawa's military and civilian diving communities.
