BTC, or Baie Ternay Center, is an intermediate dive site within the Baie Ternay Marine National Park on Mahé's northwestern coast in the Seychelles. This protected bay has been a marine national park since 1979, and decades of conservation have created one of the richest marine environments on Mahé, where the reef descends to twenty meters through a granite and coral landscape of exceptional quality. The bay's protected status has preserved a marine environment that showcases what Seychelles reefs achieve when human pressure is minimized. Coral growth is vigorous and diverse, with hard coral species creating the primary framework and soft corals adding tropical color throughout. The granite boulders typical of the Inner Islands add their dramatic character to the reef landscape. Fish populations within Baie Ternay are among the most abundant on Mahé. The marine park's protection has allowed species to reach impressive sizes and densities, with groupers, sweetlips, and Napoleon wrasses present in numbers that unprotected sites cannot match. Schools of tropical fish create constant activity above the reef, their density reflecting decades of effective conservation. The bay's sheltered position creates reliable diving conditions with good visibility and manageable currents. The granite boulder formations provide the passages and overhangs that add exploratory interest, while the coral gardens between the formations offer rich biodiversity for close-up observation. Turtle encounters within the bay are common, with both hawksbill and green sea turtles utilizing the healthy reef for feeding and resting. Reef sharks patrol the bay's deeper sections, their presence a healthy indicator of the ecosystem's completeness. BTC delivers diving of exceptional quality within an established marine national park, combining the Seychelles' unique granite scenery with the abundant marine life that conservation makes possible.
