Cap Matoopa is an intermediate dive site off the northwestern coast of Mahé in the Seychelles, where a rocky headland descends to twenty-five meters through the distinctive granite boulder landscape that makes Seychelles diving unique among Indian Ocean destinations. The granitic geology of the inner islands creates underwater scenery found nowhere else in the tropics. The dive site features Mahé's characteristic giant granite boulders, their rounded forms creating a dramatic underwater landscape of passages, overhangs, and cavern-like spaces. These massive rocks, some the size of houses, have settled in arrangements that create a natural labyrinth where divers can weave between the formations while exploring the marine communities that inhabit them. The granite surfaces are covered with marine growth that softens the rock's smooth profiles. Sponges, soft corals, and encrusting organisms create a colorful biological overlay, while hard corals colonize the horizontal surfaces where light permits their growth. The contrast between the grey granite and the warm tones of the biological growth creates a visual character unique to the Seychelles' granitic islands. Fish populations at Cap Matoopa include the Indian Ocean species typical of the Inner Seychelles. Surgeonfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish add tropical color to the granite landscape, while larger species including groupers and sweetlips occupy the more prominent overhangs. Reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, and turtles are commonly encountered cruising along the reef or resting on the boulders. The site's granite topography creates unique habitats that support species not commonly found on purely coral reefs. The deep crevices between boulders provide shelter for lobsters, moray eels, and the various crustaceans that inhabit the granite's hidden spaces. Nurse sharks sometimes rest on the sandy bottom between the boulder formations. Cap Matoopa delivers the quintessential Seychelles diving experience: dramatic granite scenery, healthy tropical marine life, and the unique underwater aesthetic that makes these islands' diving a genuinely distinctive experience in the Indian Ocean.
