La Catedral is one of the Canary Islands' most atmospheric dive sites — a semi-submerged volcanic arch on the north coast of La Palma that forms a natural cathedral-like passage through the rock, its vaulted interior reaching up to 10 meters in height and its floor bathed in blue light filtering from the open ocean beyond. The combination of architectural geology and pristine reef life has made it La Palma's signature dive and one of the most photographed volcanic features in the archipelago. The dive typically enters through the cathedral's western opening at 15-18 meters, passes through the vaulted chamber where blue light streams from vertical fissures above, and exits at the eastern opening onto a healthy reef slope that descends to 30 meters. The rock surfaces inside the cathedral are completely colonized by encrusting sponges, red and orange colonial corals, and small gorgonian fans, while schools of damselfish, grunts, and cleaner wrasses inhabit the swim-through. Marine life is typical of the deep-water volcanic reefs of the Canary Islands. Barracuda schools patrol the cathedral's exit, large groupers and moray eels inhabit the crevices, and the open reef beyond attracts trigger fish, parrotfish, and wrasses. Octopus are common on the rocky terrain, and the cathedral's shady interior hosts the nocturnal species that emerge at dusk — cardinal fish, soldierfish, and hunting moray eels. Sea turtles and the occasional dolphin pass by the dive site. La Catedral is Open Water diving with a slight Advanced recommendation for the swim-through (which has a minimum height of 3-4 meters throughout — comfortably navigable for any certified diver). Reached by boat from Puerto Tazacorte or Tazacorte dive operators (10-15 minutes). Visibility 20-35 meters, water temperatures 19-24°C. Best conditions May through November. The site is a regular stop on all La Palma dive itineraries and pairs beautifully with the nearby Malpique wreck and the volcanic reefs of the Fuencaliente peninsula.
