Cabeza del Caballito 'La Cate' is a signature dive of the Vera Playa region in southeast Spain — a rocky promontory on the Mediterranean coast whose underwater topography features a dramatic series of caves, swim-throughs, and overhangs nicknamed 'La Catedral' (The Cathedral) for the cathedral-like space formed by the largest chamber. The site combines the geological drama of karstic Mediterranean cave systems with the warm-water marine life typical of the Almerian coast. The dive descends from the shore to 18-22 meters along a sloping reef of rocks, sea grass beds, and scattered coral outcrops before arriving at the Cabeza del Caballito promontory. The cathedral chamber is accessed through a narrow entrance at 12-15 meters and opens into a large vaulted space whose ceiling reaches within 5 meters of the surface. Sunlight filters through fissures in the rock, creating the blue-green cathedral effect that gives the site its name. Divers can exit through a second opening on the far side. Marine life is characteristic of the warmer western Mediterranean. Schools of red mullet, bream, and salema forage along the rocky bottom, while octopus, cuttlefish, and small moray eels inhabit the crevices. Groupers are occasionally sighted in the deeper sections, and the sea grass beds surrounding the promontory support seahorses, pipefish, and the specialized cast of Mediterranean macro species. Nudibranchs are abundant, and the cathedral's shady interior hosts scorpionfish, cardinal fish, and hunting moray eels. The site is suitable for Open Water divers with basic cave-like experience — the swim-through has generous clearance but requires comfort with darker conditions. Reached as a shore dive or boat dive from Vera Playa dive operators. Visibility 10-25 meters (variable with weather and season), water temperatures 14-23°C. Best conditions May through October, with the warmest and clearest water July-September. The site pairs well with other local dives exploring the region's rocky coastline and sea-grass ecosystems.
