Fresh Water Cave Sfakia is a unique dive site on Crete's rugged south coast near the village of Sfakia (Chora Sfakion). This remarkable cave features underwater freshwater springs that mix with the warm Mediterranean seawater, creating mesmerizing halocline effects where the two water masses meet. The visual distortion at the mixing layer is a surreal experience. The cave has a spacious entrance allowing natural light to penetrate deep inside, with stalactites and flowstone formations testifying to its geological age. Marine life adapted to the brackish conditions includes specialist crustaceans and small fish. The remote location adds to the adventure, accessible by boat from Sfakia harbor.
