Grouper Rock is a demanding advanced dive on the south coast of Crete near Paleochora, renowned for its resident population of large dusky groupers that give the site its name. A massive submerged rock formation creates walls, overhangs, and deep crevices where these impressive fish have established their territories. The deeper sections reveal gorgonian fans, red sponges, and colonies of false black coral. Currents can be strong, bringing amberjack and barracuda sweeping past the rock. Moray eels of impressive size occupy the deeper holes, and eagle rays occasionally pass through. The combination of depth, current, and marine life density makes this one of Paleochora's premier dive sites.
