Italian Cave is an advanced dive site on the south coast of Crete near Paleochora, named for its historical connection to Italian forces during World War II who reportedly used the cave for shelter. The cave system features multiple chambers with both underwater and air-filled sections. Divers navigate through dark passages where walls are encrusted with orange and yellow sponges, and lobsters hide in deep recesses. The main air chamber reveals wartime artifacts and graffiti on the walls, adding historical intrigue to the dive. Excellent buoyancy control is essential due to narrow passages and fine silt. A powerful torch and proper cave training are mandatory.
