Kakia Skala is a gentle beginner dive site on the south coast of Crete near Paleochora. The name translates to 'bad stairs' in Greek, referring to the rocky shore entry, but once in the water the site is very forgiving. A gradual slope of sand and rock descends to modest depths, with scattered boulders providing shelter for a variety of Mediterranean species. Octopus, moray eels, and colorful nudibranchs are regular sightings, along with schools of chromis and damselfish. The protected south coast location means calm seas and warm water for most of the season. An honest, unpretentious site that rewards patient divers with consistent marine encounters.
