The USAT Liberty Wreck at Tulamben is Bali's most iconic dive site and one of the most accessible shipwrecks in the world. This American World War II cargo ship, torpedoed in 1942, lies on a black sand slope just 30 meters from shore, stretching from 5 to 38 meters depth. The 120-meter wreck is now a thriving artificial reef blanketed in soft corals, gorgonians, barrel sponges, and hydroids that support an extraordinary density and diversity of marine life. Bumphead parrotfish gather at dawn, pygmy seahorses hide on gorgonians, and resident Napoleon wrasse patrol the structure, while schools of glassfish swirl inside the hull compartments. The wreck's broken-open structure allows safe exploration without formal penetration skills, and the shore access means no boat is needed. Night diving on the Liberty is legendary, with Spanish dancers, flashlight fish, and hunting predators transforming the wreck into an underwater theater.
