The House Reef near Tulamben on Bali's northeast coast is a relaxed shore-accessible dive offering a black sand slope with scattered coral formations descending to about 30 meters. The volcanic substrate creates an excellent backdrop for muck diving and macro photography, hosting leaf scorpionfish, nudibranchs, ribbon eels, and various species of shrimp gobies. Coral patches support schools of damselfish, wrasses, and parrotfish, while garden eels create swaying colonies in the sandy stretches. The site is dived directly from shore with no current, allowing for extended bottom times and unhurried exploration. Night diving reveals a different cast of characters including Spanish dancers, bobtail squid, and hunting crabs. The proximity to Tulamben's famous USAT Liberty wreck makes the house reef a convenient complement for a full day of diving, offering a completely different underwater experience just a short distance along the coast.
