Gili Asahan is a remote and exciting dive site off a small island south of Lombok, in waters where the Indian Ocean's cold upwellings meet the warm Flores Sea creating rich and productive conditions. The submerged reef features rocky walls and pinnacles descending into deep water, covered in healthy soft corals and gorgonians. The nutrient-rich currents attract schooling hammerhead sharks during the right season, along with grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and large schools of trevally and barracuda. The reef also hosts impressive macro life in the calmer sections, with nudibranchs and flatworms among the coral growth. Strong, unpredictable currents and a remote location make Gili Asahan exclusively for experienced divers, but the combination of shark encounters and pristine reef conditions make it a compelling destination for those exploring Lombok's wilder southern waters.
