The P47 Plane Wreck is a remarkable historical dive site in Raja Ampat, West Papua, featuring the well-preserved remains of a World War II American P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane resting on a coral slope at around 25 to 35 meters depth. The aircraft sits upright with its distinctive silhouette still recognizable, gradually being claimed by the reef with soft corals, sponges, and tunicates covering the fuselage and wings. Schools of batfish and sweetlips congregate around the wreck, while nudibranchs and flatworms inhabit the encrusted surfaces. The surrounding reef is healthy and diverse, typical of Raja Ampat's extraordinary biodiversity. The combination of WWII history and tropical reef diving creates a uniquely atmospheric experience. The moderate depth and generally manageable currents make it accessible to advanced divers, though the remote location requires a liveaboard or dedicated boat trip to reach.
