Batu Bolong in Komodo National Park is a pinnacle dive of rare drama and biodiversity — a submerged volcanic spire rising from 70 meters directly to the surface, positioned in the tidal stream between Komodo and Tatawa islands where the powerful currents of the Indonesian Throughflow concentrate pelagic life. The pinnacle is consistently ranked among the top ten dive sites in Southeast Asia and is the signature experience of most Komodo liveaboard itineraries. The dive profile depends entirely on tidal conditions. At slack water, divers can circumnavigate the pinnacle and observe the exceptional coral cover — hard corals on the reef top, gorgonian fans two meters across on the flanks, soft corals in pink and purple on the deeper walls, and black coral forests at 30 meters. When the current runs — which is most of the time — the dive becomes a thrilling drift, with divers positioning themselves in the current-shadow on the leeward side to observe pelagic action streaming past. The biodiversity is spectacular. Manta rays visit cleaning stations during the southeast monsoon, schools of dogtooth tuna and giant trevally hunt in the current, and whitetip and blacktip reef sharks patrol the pinnacle. Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and resident barracuda schools are common, and the coral heads support a rich population of macro life — pygmy seahorses on gorgonian fans, nudibranchs, leaf scorpionfish, and ornate ghost pipefish. Batu Bolong is Advanced Open Water diving only — currents exceed three knots, down-currents occur along the leeward flank, and the depth and drift profile are committing. Dive operators schedule around tides, with early morning and late afternoon slack periods offering calmer conditions. Reached by day boat from Labuan Bajo (90 minutes) or as part of Komodo liveaboard itineraries. Visibility 15-30 meters, water temperatures 24-28°C (cooler during upwelling season). Peak manta cleaning-station activity runs June-October.
