The Canyon near Taormina is an intermediate dive site on Sicily's Ionian coast, where a deep fissure in the volcanic seabed creates an impressive underwater gorge reaching 30 meters. The canyon walls are steep and narrow, decorated with sea fans, false black coral, and patches of vibrant orange and yellow encrusting sponges. The site's volcanic origin is evident in the dark basalt formations and occasional lava tubes that branch off the main canyon. Moray eels peer from crevices along the walls, while schools of saddled bream and two-banded bream cruise the upper water column. At the canyon's deepest point, large boulders create overhangs where groupers and conger eels rest. The dramatic topography and reliable marine life encounters make this one of Taormina's signature dives.
