Chale Reef is a beginner-friendly dive site off Diani Beach in southern Kenya, located near Chale Island where a fringing reef creates a diverse underwater ecosystem. The reef features a mix of hard and soft corals with excellent coverage, including massive brain corals, table formations, and delicate branching species. The fish life is prolific — schools of snappers and sweetlips cruise the reef edge, while territorial triggerfish and curious groupers inhabit the coral structures. Green turtles are regular visitors, grazing on the algae that grows on the reef flat. The site is within the influence of the warm Mozambique Current, which brings occasional pelagic visitors including whale sharks during the northeast monsoon season. Cleaner stations are active throughout the reef, with cleaner wrasses servicing larger fish in fascinating symbiotic displays. Chale Reef exemplifies the rich marine biodiversity of Kenya's protected southern coastline.
