Knife Rock is a beginner-friendly dive site near Pigeon Island in the Trincomalee area of Sri Lanka, where a distinctive blade-shaped rock formation rises from the seabed to 12 metres depth. The sharp, narrow profile of the main rock gives the site its evocative name and creates a striking underwater landmark visible from a considerable distance in the clear east coast waters. The knife-like rock formation runs along a roughly north-south orientation, with its narrow edge rising vertically from the sandy bottom. The two broad faces of the rock present different aspects to the current, creating sheltered and exposed sides with distinct marine communities. Divers can circuit the formation, experiencing the contrast between the current-swept side with its robust hard corals and sea fans, and the sheltered side with its delicate soft corals and congregations of resting fish. Coral coverage on Knife Rock is healthy and diverse, benefiting from the excellent water quality in the Trincomalee area and the proximity to Pigeon Island's marine sanctuary. The rock's vertical surfaces support particularly impressive growths, with gorgonian fans, sponges, and encrusting corals creating a colourful coating over the grey rock. Marine life is concentrated around the formation, with the rock acting as a focal point for species moving across the sandy surroundings. Schools of fusiliers and snappers circle the rock, while groupers and moray eels inhabit its crevices. The sandy bottom at the base often reveals blue-spotted ribbontail rays and various species of flatfish. Reef sharks occasionally cruise past, adding excitement to the dive. The beginner-friendly rating reflects the manageable depth, clear navigation around the single formation, and the typically calm conditions during the diving season. The site's compact nature allows it to be thoroughly explored in a single dive. Visibility commonly reaches 15 to 20 metres during the April to September season, with warm water temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees.
