Welluore Rock is a beginner-friendly dive site off Sri Lanka's northeastern coast near Trincomalee, where a rocky formation at 12 metres provides an accessible introduction to the excellent diving this area offers. Trincomalee's natural harbour and offshore islands create protected diving conditions that make many sites suitable for less experienced divers. The rock formation at Welluore consists of boulders and low reef walls that create a varied terrain at comfortable depth. The gentle profile and typically manageable current make it well suited for open water certification dives and for divers gaining experience in tropical reef environments. Coral coverage on the rocky substrate is developing well, with the warm, clear waters of Trincomalee's coast providing favourable conditions for coral growth. Hard coral species including Acropora, Porites, and faviids are well represented, while soft corals and sponges add colour to shaded areas. The coral health in this region benefits from the relatively low levels of coastal development compared to the southwestern coast. Marine life at Welluore Rock includes the diverse tropical species typical of the Indian Ocean's eastern Sri Lankan waters. Colourful reef fish including butterflyfish, angelfish, and wrasses patrol the coral formations, while schools of fusiliers and snappers pass through regularly. Sea turtles are common visitors, drawn by the healthy reef and seagrass areas nearby. The Trincomalee area is accessed during the northeast monsoon from April to September, when the eastern coast enjoys its calm season. During this period, visibility can reach 15 to 25 metres, significantly better than many southern coast sites. Water temperatures average 28 to 30 degrees. Welluore Rock serves as an excellent starting point for exploring Trincomalee's diving, which includes more challenging sites as well as the nearby Pigeon Island marine sanctuary.
