Mortar Rock

Mortar Rock is a beginner-friendly dive site near Pigeon Island in the Trincomalee area of northeastern Sri Lanka, reaching just 8 metres depth. This shallow, accessible site provides a gentle introduction to the excellent marine environment that makes Trincomalee one of Sri Lanka's premier diving destinations during the east coast season. The site features a rocky formation rising from a sandy bottom, with the rock's compact structure creating concentrated marine habitat at a comfortable depth. The shallow profile means excellent natural light penetration throughout the dive, illuminating the corals and marine life in vivid colour and making the site particularly rewarding for underwater photography. Coral coverage on Mortar Rock benefits from the generally healthy marine environment of the Trincomalee area. Hard corals including branching, table, and massive species are well represented, while the shaded sides of the rock support soft corals and sponges. The proximity to Pigeon Island's marine sanctuary means the broader ecosystem is in good health, with larval supply from the protected area helping to maintain reef vitality at surrounding sites. The fish community is colourful and diverse, with butterflyfish, damselfish, wrasses, and angelfish all present in good numbers. Juvenile fish of numerous species use the shallow reef as nursery habitat, creating lively schools that swarm through the coral branches. Anemones hosting clownfish provide reliable and photogenic encounters. The 8-metre maximum depth allows for extended bottom times, making this site ideal for relaxed exploration and for diving courses where students need ample time to practice skills between marine life observations. The typically calm conditions during the April to September season further enhance its suitability for beginners. Visibility at Mortar Rock commonly reaches 15 to 20 metres during the best season, with water temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees. This charming site is an excellent complement to the deeper dives available in the Trincomalee area.
