Pigeon Rocks is a beginner-friendly dive site within the Pigeon Island National Park area near Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast. Reaching 12 metres, this marine sanctuary site offers some of the most pristine and colourful reef diving accessible to beginners anywhere in Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island's protected status as a national park has allowed its reef ecosystems to develop with minimal human interference, resulting in coral coverage and fish diversity that exceed most mainland sites. The rocks around the island create a series of reef formations that range from shallow snorkelling-depth areas to deeper sections suitable for scuba diving. The coral coverage at Pigeon Rocks is spectacular, with high diversity and healthy colonies of numerous hard coral species. Branching Acropora in various forms, massive brain corals, and table corals of impressive diameter create a three-dimensional reef landscape pulsing with life. The coral health here is considered among the best in Sri Lanka, providing a benchmark for what the country's reefs can achieve with protection. Marine life within the protected area is abundant and remarkably approachable. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the reef's perimeter in shallow water, providing thrilling encounters for divers at all levels. Sea turtles, both green and hawksbill, are regularly sighted feeding on the reef. The reef fish community includes dense schools of snappers, fusiliers, and surgeonfish, alongside colourful individuals of butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish species. The beginner-friendly conditions reflect the sheltered position near the island, where the rocks break incoming swell to create calm diving conditions. The shallow depth and typically excellent visibility make this an ideal site for underwater photography and for building confidence in tropical reef environments. The diving season at Pigeon Island runs from April to September, with visibility often exceeding 20 metres and water temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees. Pigeon Rocks is a jewel of Sri Lankan marine conservation.
