Pigeon Island Back Side is a beginner-friendly dive site on the sheltered eastern face of Pigeon Island, near Trincomalee in northeastern Sri Lanka. Reaching 14 metres, this site offers a different perspective from the more frequently dived western and southern sides of the island, with calmer conditions and a reef character distinct from its more exposed counterparts. The back side of Pigeon Island is sheltered from the prevailing winds and swell during the diving season, creating particularly calm and clear conditions. This shelter has encouraged the development of delicate coral species that might struggle on the more exposed faces of the island, resulting in a reef with a softer, more colourful character. Coral coverage is excellent, benefiting from the island's national park protection. Branching corals form extensive thickets in the shallows, while the deeper sections support impressive table coral formations. The variety of coral species is high, with the sheltered conditions allowing even fragile species to flourish. Soft corals in vivid pinks and purples add dramatic colour to the overhangs and vertical rock faces. The marine life at the back side includes the full diversity of Pigeon Island's protected ecosystem. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the reef, their presence a testament to the healthy ecosystem. Sea turtles are frequently encountered, often feeding on sponges or resting on sandy patches. The reef fish community is abundant and colourful, with dense schools of damselfish, fusiliers, and surgeonfish creating constant activity. The calm conditions on the back side make it particularly suitable for macro photography, with nudibranchs, flatworms, and various shrimp species hiding among the coral formations. The reduced current also makes it comfortable for extended bottom times at the gentle maximum depth. The east coast season from April to September provides the best conditions, with visibility often reaching 15 to 25 metres. Pigeon Island Back Side is a must-dive for visitors to the Trincomalee area.
