Buyuk is an exciting dive site on the southeastern coast of Nusa Penida, where cold upwellings from the deep Lombok Strait create conditions favored by mola mola and other large pelagic species. The underwater landscape features a rocky slope with boulders and overhangs dropping into the deep blue, adorned with barrel sponges, gorgonian fans, and encrusting corals. During the cool season from July to October, the site becomes a hotspot for ocean sunfish sightings as the cold, nutrient-rich water draws them to cleaning stations on the reef. White-tip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, and schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers sweep across the reef face. Strong thermoclines and currents demand advanced skills, but Buyuk's reputation for consistent mola mola encounters makes it a bucket-list dive for visiting divers.
