Gili Medas is a remote dive site off the south coast of Lombok, in the Belongas Bay area known for some of Indonesia's most exciting shark diving. The submerged rock formation creates an underwater haven surrounded by deep water where strong currents attract large pelagic species. Hammerhead sharks are the star attraction, with schools regularly spotted during the right conditions, alongside white-tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, and occasional thresher sharks. The rocky reef is draped in soft corals and sponges, with trevally, tuna, and barracuda hunting in the current-swept waters. Eagle rays and manta rays also visit seasonally. The remote location and challenging conditions—strong currents, occasional surge, and limited visibility—make Gili Medas strictly for experienced divers, but those who make the journey are rewarded with world-class shark encounters.
