Isonzo is an advanced wreck dive site off Sardinia's southeastern coast near Cagliari, where the remains of the Italian steamship Isonzo rest at 40 meters depth on a sandy seabed. The vessel, sunk during World War II, has become an impressive artificial reef over the decades. The hull structure remains largely intact, rising several meters from the bottom and providing dramatic swim-along profiles. The steel plates are colonized by dense gorgonian growth, orange sponges, and anemones, while large groupers have established territories within the wreck's compartments. Scorpionfish lie camouflaged on the decking, and moray eels occupy the countless openings in the corroding structure. Schools of barracuda frequently circle overhead. The depth and sometimes limited visibility require solid experience, but the Isonzo rewards with a powerful blend of maritime history and vibrant marine colonization.
